Problem

Late intervention costs lives

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the world’s number one silent killer – responsible for one in three deaths globally and one in four in Australia.

Despite the high prevalence of CVD, early symptoms are often missed. For example, up to 80% of heart failure diagnoses and hospital admissions are unplanned and occur in emergency situations, with many patients reporting symptoms for years earlier. A recent study found that people who waited more than two weeks to see a heart specialist were 21% more likely to die within a year than those who were seen within two days. This delayed detection can have deadly consequences.

CVD disproportionately affects those already experiencing disadvantage.

Barriers such as geography (living in remote and regional areas), socio-economic factors, access to health facilities and long wait times make timely diagnosis difficult, perpetuating cycles of inequity and loss.

The current system is reactive, fragmented, and expensive – failing to catch disease until it’s too late. To reduce preventable deaths, we must shift from crisis response to early, accessible, and equitable detection.
