Vic CVRN Career Development Grant

Flexible funding to accelerate EMCR careers in cardiovascular research

Investing in Victoria's emerging cardiovascular research leaders

The Vic CVRN Career Development Grant is the first funding initiative delivered by the network, designed to support Early and Mid-Career Researchers (EMCRs) to strengthen research capability and enhance their career track records.

The scheme is intentionally flexible, allowing recipients to tailor funding to their individual career development needs.

The grant is open to Early and Mid-Career Researchers (EMCRs) who are current Vic CVRN members.

Funding may be used for activities that clearly support career progression and strengthen the applicant’s career track record. This may include training, conference attendance, collaboration development, professional services, publication costs, or other initiatives that contribute to career advancement.

Funding may be used for a combination of activities.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this grant, applicants must:

  • Be a researcher working in cardiovascular health, including prevention, diagnosis, management, or related conditions (e.g. stroke, diabetes, kidney disease)
  • Be an early- to mid-career researcher, defined as <10 years post-PhD (excluding career disruptions; see below)
  • Note: Academic title (e.g. Associate Professor) does not determine eligibility. Applicants must meet the career stage definition, and the proposed activity must align with the objectives of the scheme.
  • Be a current member of the Vic CVRN
  • Be from an NHMRC Administering Institution
  • Be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, an Australian permanent resident, or have applied for Australian permanent residency at the time of application
  • Submit only one application per funding round
  • Declare any conflicts of interest. Appropriate conflict of interest processes will be followed during the review process

Grant value

The Vic CVRN will award up to ten individual grants, each valued at up to $1,500. These are one-off grants to support career development activities and must be used within 12 months from the start of the grant agreement.

Frequently asked questions

Unspent funds must be returned to the Vic CVRN via the Heart Foundation.

Yes, funding can be used to contribute to part of the cost of an activity.

All funding must be spent within the 12 months of the grant start date. If the activity cannot be completed in this period, the grant must be relinquished.

Overlapping funding refers to claiming the same costs from multiple funding sources, which is not permitted.

Yes, but you must identify which costs are already funded and ensure you are not requesting funding from those same items.

This is the date you are notified that you have passed your PhD. The PhD must be formally conferred before the grant commences.
