Targeted delivery of mRNA therapeutics to combat inflammation and cardiovascular diseases

My research aims to provide better treatment for patients suffering from cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Chronic inflammatory CVDs are difficult to treat because traditional drugs often fall short. mRNA-based therapy can provide a safe and effective approach, as shown with the current COVID-19 vaccines. However, mRNA degrades rapidly, so my work focuses on the packaging the mRNA into tiny, injectable materials to serve as nanodelivery vehicles. This will help protect the mRNA and make sure it reaches its target in the body. Using my expertise in nanomaterials and chemistry, my nanodelivery systems are designed with the ability to target the affected area to provide safer and more effective treatment. These bioinspired nanomaterials can also be visualised using ultrasound imaging, which will facilitate an early diagnosis and allow monitoring treatment success. These innovative approaches address the current challenges in preventing, diagnosing, and treating inflammatory and CVDs. Their translation promises major clinical benefits to patients.
