Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women and accounts for almost a quarter of all cancer diagnoses worldwide. Due to advancements in modern breast cancer therapy, we are now seeing higher rates of cure and the conversion of a terminal illness into a chronic disease. There has been a resultant steep rise in cancer survivors and over time, cardiovascular disease overtakes as the leading cause of death in this population.
Assessing, understanding, and mitigating the risk of cancer therapy related cardiotoxicity (CTR-CT) is crucial to the safe and effective management of patients with cancer.
We have developed a smartphone app to promote exercise and heart health in breast cancer patients which improved the exercise capacity of the women involved in the NHF funded pilot study (SMARTBREAST 1.0). We now propose a large-scale study to see the effect of the program on cardiac risk factors and collect information that may be helpful in identifying women at greatest risk of heart disease.
