Novel mRNA as a game-changing treatment to combat inflammation-related cardiovascular diseases

Years funded: 2024 - 2026

Our research aims to help patients suffering from chronic cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), Australia's leading cause of death. CVDs are caused by uncontrolled inflammation, in which current treatments are limited. Based on the success of COVID-19 mRNA vaccines which provide special instructions for our cells to fight the virus. In this work, we will make mRNA to fight the inflammation and prevent CVDs. We will packaging them into tiny, injectable particles that will protect the mRNA and deliver the instructions to the affected areas. These nanoparticles will be designed to have properties that enable them to be visualised on diagnostic ultrasound imaging and to provide controlled-release of mRNA exactly where they are needed. Overall, we aim to develop a precise mRNA nanodelivery system that can be used for diagnosis, as well as to provide a safer and more effective treatment.
