GrainSwitch: targeting online grocery shopping to encourage heart-healthy grain choices

Years funded: 2024 - 2025

Eating whole-grain foods like oats, wholemeal bread, and brown rice is an important part of a heart-healthy eating pattern and can help prevent heart disease. However, it can be very challenging for people to choose good quality whole-grain foods when grocery shopping because there is little regulation regarding whole-grain labelling in Australia, and some products are labelled as "sources" of whole grain even when they contain only small amounts. We will develop an online grocery shopping tool (GrainSwitch) designed to encourage consumers to identify high whole-grain foods. GrainSwitch will help at-risk Australians to make healthy grain food choices by showing them easy-to understand information about how much whole grain is in the packaged foods they want to buy and nudging them towards choosing higher whole-grain alternatives. We will test the acceptability of GrainSwitch with 30 participants at increased risk of heart disease. Findings will be used to enhance the design of GrainSwitch for future trials in Australia.
