Guidelines for cardiovascular disease (CVD) have been available for more than 10 years, yet uptake by general practitioners (GPs) remains poor. GPs face several barriers to collect the information required to complete guideline-recommended assessment of CVD risk, including lack of time. This project addresses these barriers by collecting all the required risk factors when patients attend pathology services for a cholesterol test. This approach reports CVD risk directly to the GP to improve CVD prevention without requiring any additional work.
It remains unknown how GPs respond to, and action, CVD risk reported via pathology services.
This project will address this gap so that medical care pathways can be optimised.
Real-world patient CVD risk reports and follow-up care will be examined with GPs and patients to identify processes and tools to increase uptake of guideline-recommended CVD risk management. Ultimately, the findings will inform implementation strategies to improve CVD prevention.
