Improving the genetic diagnosis of cardiovascular disease

Associate Professor Eleni Giannoulatou, Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute Limited

2022 Future Leader Fellowship - Level 2

Years funded: 2023-2026

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) claims an estimated 17.9 million lives each year and has remained the leading cause of death globally for the last 20 years. In this research programme, we are focusing on three cardiovascular diseases a) Congenital Heart Disease, a structural heart abnormality present at birth b) Dilated Cardiomyopathy, a disease of the heart muscle that can lead to heart failure, and c) Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection, a separation of the coronary arterial wall that can cause heart attack or sudden death. Using genomic technologies that interrogate the DNA of CVD patients and novel computational methodology, we aim to improve the rate of genetic diagnosis of CVD and provide better understanding of the disease mechanism. This work will help patients to receive personalised management and treatment and improved risk assessment concerning the disease risk in their family.
