Heart Foundation welcomes funding grants for Melbourne’s 20-minute neighbourhoods

The Victorian State Government has committed three $120,000 grants to help encourage physical activity.

The Heart Foundation today welcomed the Victorian State Government’s commitment of three $120,000 grants for Strathmore, Croydon South and Sunshine West as part of the 20-minute neighbourhood pilot program.

These grants will support local infrastructure in these suburbs and create activities that encourage more people to walk, cycle and shop within a 20-minute walk from their home.

Heart Foundation CEO Victoria Kellie-Ann Jolly commended the Victorian Government on its support for councils to deliver local initiatives that get people moving and make it easy to access their daily needs close to home.

“We congratulate the Victorian Government for its funding support to help Strathmore, Croydon South and Sunshine West implement healthy active living initiatives,” Ms Jolly said.
Building wider footpaths and bike lanes that allow for social distancing and are well-connected to local public transport and shops will encourage more people to find their feet.
“Walking is free, easy and great for your health as it can reduce high blood pressure, modify unhealthy cholesterol and help you maintain a healthy weight. Brisk walking for 30 minutes on most days can lower the risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes by around 35%”.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in Victoria, claiming 12 lives every day. More than 36,500 Victorians are hospitalised for heart disease each year.

Ms Jolly said, “While coronavirus forced Melburnians to work from home, many rediscovered how being active was essential for their physical health and emotional wellbeing. Yet in some areas, local amenities and services may have been lacking, putting people off participating in outdoor activity.

“Improving local liveability through street trading and dining will encourage people to spend in their suburbs, which helps business and communities as we emerge from coronavirus restrictions.
Supporting councils to create more green open spaces and pop-up parks boosts community activities that build an active, vibrant and socially-connected local culture.
“As people learn to live with COVID normal, we welcome these steps by the Victorian Government to cement active, healthy living initiatives for better heart health.”

Following councils’ successful implementation of the 20-Minute Neighbourhood recommendations, the Heart Foundation calls for a government review to expand and deliver the program across Melbourne’s suburbs and regional areas.

The 20-minute neighbourhood pilot program was delivered by the Department of Environment Land Water and Planning in partnership with the Heart Foundation, Victoria Walks, Moonee Valley, Brimbank and Maroondah councils.
