Tracking Australia’s heart health

About the heart health tracker

Over time, this tracker will help us understand if Australia is heading in the right direction to achieve heart health for everyone by 2050.

The heart health tracker brings together 46 indicators that we will use to measure the nation’s progress over time towards the four goals set out in Health for Every Heart, our 25-year vision for Australia’s heart health. The tracker will tell us whether Australia is taking steps in the right direction and where the nation may need to re-focus its efforts to get us back on course.

Tracking national heart health progress

Using national data sets, we can track the nation’s progress towards our 25-year heart health vision, Health for Every Heart.

Australia’s 2025 baseline indicators

In 2025, the tracker shows Australia’s starting point (baseline values) for each heart health indicator. More data will be added over the lifespan of the 25-year vision.

Current data gaps in heart health

There are data gaps in some heart health areas that currently limit how we can track progress towards some of our heart health targets.

Improving indicators with new data

New data may become available that means we have better indicators to understand how our heart health is tracking.

Updates to the tracker

In the first year of our 25-year vision, the tracker will display the baseline measure for each indicator, which helps define the starting point for Australia’s heart health. In future updates, more data will be added so that Australia’s heart health progress can be visualised as a dashboard displaying a set of national indicators of heart health over time. By monitoring these indicators, we can work out which areas of people’s heart health are staying about the same, improving or declining.

In some areas of heart health, data development will be needed to modify this set of indicators and improve the way we track some of the heart health targets set out in Health for Every Heart. We expect that the set of indicators will be updated as new data sources become available, and research outcomes demonstrate other risk factors that could better inform us about the nation’s heart health.
