CVD and COVID-19 Grant

Grants to support ground-breaking research focused on COVID-19 and its interaction with heart conditions.

The Heart Foundation has a long history of supporting ground-breaking research and continues this with the announcement of a targeted research grant focused on COVID-19 and its interaction with heart conditions.

As a novel virus, limited research and evidence shows that people with cardiovascular disease are at a higher risk of severe illness or death with COVID-19. Early data also suggests that cardiac arrhythmias and cardiac dysfunction are common complications of COVID-19.

Due to the limited research and evidence available, there are gaps in knowledge of why people with cardiovascular disease appear to be more vulnerable to severe outcomes, and gaps in treating the cardiac complications of COVID-19.

The purpose of this grant is to improve the morbidity and mortality of outcomes for people with cardiovascular disease, and can include, but not limited to:

  • COVID-19 interaction with cardiac medications (e.g. ACE and ARBs)
  • Link between cardiovascular disease and COVID-19 including cardiovascular damage with COVID-19 in people without known cardiac disease
  • Understanding which cardiac conditions are at higher risk of COVID-19complications
  • Models of care for cardiac patients with COVID-19 and/or during COVID-19 (including digital outpatient clinics and cardiac rehabilitation)
  • Investigating effective management of acute coronary syndromes in suspected or confirmed COVID-19 cases
  • The impact of social behavioural restrictions on cardiac outcomes

The grants have been partly funded with support from Sanofi Australia and Pfizer Australia.

Who can apply?

The Heart Foundation welcomes applicants involved in cardiovascular health research and the complications of COVID-19.

Applicants (Chief Investigator only) must be an Australian or New Zealand citizen, a permanent Australian resident or have applied for Australian permanent residency at the time of the application.

The Heart Foundation will only accept one application per applicant.

What’s the value of the Grant?

Project Support of $100,000 for 12 months.

The grants have been partly funded with support from Sanofi Australia and Pfizer Australia.

Applications open: July 20, 2020
Applications close: August 28, 2020
Successful applicants notified: January 2021
