For professionals: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples identification training

Asking the Question of Origin course helps with identification of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients, in line with standard practice. 

Asking the Question of Origin course was developed through the Lighthouse Hospital Project to improve patient care and support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.  

This course provides training for health professionals on how to identify Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients. 

The course aims to:  

  • Increase understanding of the importance, responsibilities and reasons for identifying Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, in line with standard practice.  
  • Improve knowledge, skills and confidence to identify Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and record identification data in line with standard practice.  
  • You may be able to self-claim continuing professional development (CPD) points on completion of this course. For enquiries about point allocation, please contact your professional organisation.

The content in this course reflects the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards (second edition) and the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) Standards for general practice (fifth edition). The course prototype was developed and piloted by Bairnsdale Regional Health Service through the Lighthouse Hospital Project.
