Gifts in Wills

Gifts in Wills

Exciting breakthroughs in heart research are made possible every day by Australians who leave a gift to the Heart Foundation in their Will.

As a charity, we rely on donations for over 80% of our funding. Your generous gifts are critical to ensuring we can commit to the long-term funding required for significant breakthroughs.

A gift in your Will is a simple and powerful way to provide ongoing support to the causes closest to your heart, and to enable real change for future generations.

Who leaves gifts in Wills?

People leave gifts of all sizes. You don’t have to be wealthy to leave a gift in your Will as every dollar has the power to save lives. Make sure your loved ones are looked after first.

You can be sure that when combined with those of other supporters, your gift will always have a powerful impact, no matter the size.

What your gift can achieve

The generosity of people who have left a gift to the Heart Foundation in their will has shaped the state of heart research and education in Australia today.

Almost half of all donations made to the Heart Foundation come from gifts in Wills.

Thanks to these, we’ve been able to support some of the most significant breakthroughs in heart health in the world, like the introduction of pacemakers in coronary care units in hospitals and early detection methods for heart disease.

Let us know if you’ve left a gift

If you’ve decided to leave us a gift in your will, we’d love you to let us know so we can show our appreciation and keep you updated on what we are doing to help support Australians living with heart disease.

Include a Charity

Include a Charity promote charitable gifts in Wills to the Australian public, through television, radio, online and print advertising and through Include a Charity Week, held in September each year.

Through these activities they aim to raise the profile of charitable gifts in Wills, initiate conversations and engage the Australian community by asking them to think about their legacy and to consider including a charity in their Will.

How to leave a gift in your Will

There are many ways you can leave a gift. Make sure you seek legal advice when writing or updating your Will. Your solicitor or other qualified professional can help you make the choice that’s right for you.

  • Residuary bequest

A gift of what’s left of your estate (or a percentage of it) after you’ve made gifts to family and friends.

It’s not a specific amount of money, so it keeps its value regardless of inflation.

    Suggested wording:

I give ______ per cent of the residue of my estate to the National Heart Foundation of Australia [insert the Legal name for State or Territory in which you live] of [address] (found below) for its general purposes and the receipt of the Chief Executive, Treasurer, Secretary or the Public Officer for the time being will be an absolute discharge to my executor.

  • Pecuniary bequest

A set amount that you decide.

    Suggested wording:

I give $______ to the National Heart Foundation of Australia [insert the Legal name for State or Territory in which you live] of [address] for its general purposes and the receipt of the Chief Executive, Treasurer, Secretary or the Public Officer for the time being will be an absolute discharge to my executor.

  • Specific bequest

A gift of a specific item, like property or shares.

    Suggested wording:

I give [describe asset accurately] to the National Heart Foundation of Australia [insert the Legal name for State or Territory in which you live] of [address] for its general purposes and the receipt of the Chief Executive, Treasurer, Secretary or the Public Officer for the time being will be an absolute discharge to my executor.
