Using mobile-health for prevention and management of hypertension for Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Communities

Andrew Goodman, Institution: The University of Queensland

2019 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Award

Years funded: 2020-2021

To improve awareness and clinical management of hypertension in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities through the development and validation of an m-health based model of care.
Specific primary objective to increase the number patients with sustainable BP levels <140/90 mmHg confirmed in, at least, two consecutive MBS item 715 health checks.

To explore perceptions about the use of technology (including smartphones and devices (mobile Health) for the management of risk factors for people with cardiovascular disease (MPhil project).

Expected cardiovascular health outcomes The number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients taking antihypertensive medication has increased. This m-health based model of care has facilitated BP and medication management once hypertension has been diagnosed, thus reducing hypertension rates and the burden of cardiovascular disease in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population.

This new m-health based model of care can be adapted/enhanced to support interventions to address cardiovascular disease risk factors through increasing physical activity and reducing smoking rates, in addition to improved diagnosis and management of hypertension.
