Optimising the treatment of coronary artery disease

Professor Ravinay Bhindi, Institution: University of Sydney

2016 Future Leader Fellowship

Years funded: 2017-2021

With an overall aim of improving the understanding, survival, and quality of life of patients with coronary artery disease (CAD), my research program spans across molecular laboratory to the cardiac catheterisation laboratory using state of the art intravascular imaging with optical coherence tomography (OCT) and intravascular physiology using pressure wire. It encompasses two interrelated themes:

1. Improving clinical accuracy of intracoronary physiology assessments in patients presenting in atrial fibrillation presenting with symptomatic coronary artery disease and angiographically intermediate stenosis, by applying comprehensive physiology assessment. By building on an established international collaboration, my group will assess the effect of AF on the validity of standard measures FFR measures during cardiac catheterisation.

2. Improving understanding of saphenous vein graft (SVG) failure following coronary bypass surgery. By integrating and applying Molecular and Imaging techniques (OCT and Intravascular Ultrasound) already developed in my research with clinical practice, my research will comprehensively characterise critical elements of SVG failure. This will improve understanding of the SVG atherosclerosis and ‘plaque instability’ leading to improved design and application of therapeutic agents in both tree.
