Carnosine for Peripheral Vascular Disease

Professor Barbora de Courten, Institution: Monash University

2018 Vanguard Grant

Years funded: 2019-2021

Carnosine is a safe over-the-counter dipeptide commonly used to improve exercise
performance. In patients with peripheral vascular disease, exercise improves symptoms
and walking ability, but is often painful. We will test if carnosine is synergistic with exercise
and can improve symptoms and walking ability in these patients. This has important
clinical and public health implications, offering safe and affordable treatment of peripheral
vascular disease by already available means.
