Advanced cardiovascular imaging for early diagnosis and treatment

This project aims to identify the early signs of heart diseases and to better understand precise mechanisms using new imaging techniques.
Early detection will enable suitable management of these diseases by providing treatment to protect the heart.

The avoidance or delay of CV disease will achieve better health outcomes in Australia. For this purpose, four clinical studies on CV medicine will be performed:
Study 1 is an international multicentre project to examine if a new imaging technique (“myocardial strain”) for finding early disease provides a better guide for protecting the heart from cardiotoxic chemotherapy agents.

In Study 2, Dr Kazuaki Negishi will perform a series of cross-sectional studies using data from an ongoing trial to elucidate precise relationship between central blood pressure (BP) and heart damage and compare it against arm BP.

Study 3 is a 10-year observational study of the mothers and infants who were exposed to smoke from the Hazelwood coal mine fire in Victoria in 2014. Specifically, early changes in the blood vessels will be checked in the first 3 years of life.

Study 4 will explore if individual measures of air pollution will be a better marker of health consequences of exposure (heart and vessel damage).

This program seeks to enhance Dr Negishi’s existing skills and expertise, and broaden his research capacity. It will enable him to make a significant contribution to Australia’s medical research capacity and knowledge, and to develop evidence based health policies around CVD, as the results will readily be translated into practice.
