Cardiovascular disease is South Australia's leading cause of death, responsible for nearly one death every two hours.
Despite having only around 7.4% of Australia’s population, this accounts for nearly 9.4% of the nation’s deaths from cardiovascular disease.
Further, cardiovascular disease is also the most expensive disease group in terms of direct healthcare expenditure.
Much can be done to address this growing health problem, especially in the area of prevention, but it requires a commitment from government to achieve this.
The reality of South Australia’s aging population only highlights the necessity to better invest in this critical area.
Implementation of these polices by government will reduce avoidable hospital admissions, improve prevention and, most importantly of all, provide better health outcomes for South Australians with, or at risk of, cardiovascular disease.
