The Heart Foundation Tick – now on the foodservice menu
In August 2006, the Heart Foundation introduced Tick to meals eaten out of the home - a world first program. Outlets serving lunch and dinner meals now have the opportunity to serve up genuinely healthier meals by meeting Heart Foundation nutrition and quality standards, clearly signposting them with the trusted Tick.
How does it work?
Just like food in the supermarket, the Tick on meals eaten out must be earned. To do so, food outlets must meet strict standards across three main areas:
- Quality systems and processes such as food safety (HACCP), quality management, staff training, portion control, internal audits and purchasing specifications;

- Nutrition standards for serve size, saturated fat, trans fat, salt and vegetable/fibre content;
- Promotions including point of sale information, nutrition information panels, correct use of the Tick trademark and compliance with current food regulations and codes of practice. The Heart Foundation checks all promotional material prior to use.
Working with the Tick can offer a range of benefits and assistance to your business. For example:
- Access to Heart Foundation dietitians
- Assistance in recipe development
- Quality management

The 3 Step Guide
The Heart Foundation has produced a 3 Step Guide to help the foodservice industry reduce the level of trans and saturated fat in food prepared and served to Australians. It briefly outlines why these fats should be removed from our foods, where they are found on menus, and the simple steps that can be taken to reduce them. The 3 Step Guide will be updated regularly to include new products that become available.
