Be smoke free

It’s not easy to stop smoking. For some, it takes a life-threatening disease to make them break the habit, for others it takes the recognition of the risks. And it’s worth noting smokers aren’t the only people who are at risk from their smoking. A non-smoker’s risk of heart disease can increase by up to 25-30 per cent if they are exposed to second-hand smoke. Fortunately, it’s never too late. Quitting smoking, like any new activity, takes practice, planning and help.

Tips for quitting smoking
• Think about when and why you smoke
• Make a list of all the reasons why you want to quit smoking
• Set a date within two to three weeks of deciding to quit smoking
• Get support from friends and family
• Choose a method that’s best for you
• Don’t leave ashtrays, lighters or cigarette packets lying around
• Plan how you will deal with cravings and withdrawal symptoms
• Reward yourself for quitting with the money you have saved
• Think of yourself as a non-smoker from the moment you quit
• Find new ways to relax, such as deep breathing, reading or exercising
• Take up some fun physical activities and enjoy healthy eating
• Curb cravings. They only last a few minutes and it is possible to fight them off.
• If you don’t make it this time, don’t give up. Think about what you have learned from your quit attempt and plan another date to give up. It takes most people a few serious attempts before they quit for good
• Avoid having ‘just one’ cigarette after you have quit. This is how most people go back to full-scale smoking
• Be confident and focus on the fact that you’ll remain a non-smoker
