Get the facts

Understanding your heart and how it works, your risks and how to prevent heart disease are important ways to stay heart healthy and live a long life.

The good news is that heart disease is preventable.  Five positive steps you can take to reduce your risk are:

  1. Get regular checkups – when you next visit your doctor ask for a heart disease risk assessment.
  2. Know your numbers – find out your blood pressure, cholesterol level and waist circumference – and check these regularly.
  3. Be smoke free – kicking the habit is the single most important thing you can do to reduce your risk and it is never too late to benefit from giving up.
  4. Enjoy healthy eating – aim for a health weight and balanced diet – cut back on saturated fats and salt.
  5. Do at least 30 minutes physical activity, such as a walk, every day.
  6. Arm  yourself with the facts, and share it with your friends.
