Walk, chat and play
With bub in the pram, how do you manage to find time for yourself, let alone keep active?
We know that mums are great multi-taskers, and we’ve found a great example in mums and bubs walking groups.
The Heart Foundation has teamed up with the Child Health Association Tasmania to promote pram walking across the island state.
Karen Priestly is the Walk Organiser of the Seaport Mums and Bubs Walking Group in Launceston:
“I initially joined and took over the running of the group in order to meet other mums. We had just moved out here from Sydney and didn’t know anyone. Plus, it seemed like the perfect way to get out of the house and get a little exercise.”
With over thirty members on the books, it seems that this group is going from strength to strength.
“I think we get a good turnout due to the combination of getting active and being able to socialise with other mums at the same time”, says Karen. “Whilst we keep a good pace, the walks aren’t strenuous. In fact, we barely notice that we’re getting active as we’re all enjoying chatting while we walk!”
And what could be more motivating than getting to chat with other mums? Activity is a great side effect of socialising for the Seaport mums, and getting active by walking is certainly more appealing than the gym. Pram friendly routes are chosen for the walks since the kids range from as young as three weeks to 18 months old.
“The bubs get to play about in the fresh air and make friends too,” notes Karen. “There is a great sense of community when it comes to looking after them; we all help one another out.”
Even though Karen has been running the group for less than a year, she can already see the health benefits: “I feel much less stressed and more relaxed, both physically and mentally.” We don’t doubt that her friends also share in these benefits too.
With the promise of a picnic mid-walk, this group is clearly onto a winner. There is even mention of getting the hubbies involved at the weekends!
Who knew that getting active could be this enjoyable?
