Why does weight matter?
If you and your family think you could be a healthier weight, you’re not alone. Today, 60 per cent of Australians are overweight, and one in four are actually obese.
Worryingly, the obesity rates have mostly increased in people aged 18-44, meaning Australians are becoming overweight a lot earlier in life.
In fact, for the first time in history, it’s now very likely that our teenage children will die at a younger age than we do.
As a parent, it’s important to know there are many health problems associated with carrying too much body fat. These include heart disease, sleep problems, and certain types of cancer. Not being a healthy weight can also lead to other issues like poor self-esteem.

Is your family at risk?
People come in all shapes and sizes, and one person’s healthy weight often looks different to another’s. Just as being overweight isn’t ideal, neither is being too thin or being slim but never being active.
If you’re unsure if your weight is healthy, measuring your waistline is a simple check. Excess weight around the middle presents a greater health risk, so:
• Measure directly against your skin.
• Breathe out normally.
• Make sure the tape is snug, without compressing the skin.
• Measure halfway between your lowest rib and the top of your hipbone, roughly in line with your belly button.
For most adults, a waist measurement higher than the following is associated with increased risk of chronic disease.
Increased risk
Men: more than 94cms
Women: more than 80cms
Greatly increased risk
Men: more than 102cms
Women: more than 88cms
Of course, the best way to find out what your ideal weight is – and if you or your family’s weight is a health risk – is to check with your doctor.
What can I do as a parent?
The key to achieving and maintaining a healthy weight is to enjoy healthy eating and physical activity every day. When our weight changes it generally comes down to two factors – how much we eat and drink (energy in), and how active we are (energy out). It’s all about achieving a balance.
As a parent, one of the best gifts you will ever give your children is the gift of a healthy lifestyle. You are the example they will follow, so it’s vital you choose to lead an active, healthy lifestyle and show them how rewarding it can be.
