The Heart Foundation Research Medal for Lifetime Contribution to Cardiovascular Research recognises outstanding individual contribution to the fields of heart, stroke and blood vessel disease research in Australia over a sustained period.
The medal is awarded to an individual who has served as a role model through service, research and teaching. In general, the recipient of this award must have had a career spanning at least 20 years.
Previous recipients of the Research Medal have had well established research careers and are acknowledged by their peers nationally and internationally through awards, invited presentations and publications. Moreover, they have had involvement with the Heart Foundation and a history of contributions to Heart Foundation’s goals and objectives. The inaugural Research Medal was presented to Professor Paul Nestel in 2006. In 2008, Professor Robert (Bob) Graham was awarded the prestigious prize.
The next Heart Foundation Research Medal for Lifetime Contribution to Cardiovascular Research recipient will be announced at the Heart Foundation conference in May 2009.
Applications for nomination are open now. Nominations for the Heart Foundation Research Medal must be submitted by 5pm Friday 21 November 2008.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
Candidates for the Heart Foundation Research Medal must clearly demonstrate each of the following criteria:
Candidate must hold Australian Citizenship.
Candidate has received national recognition of their research (awards, invited presentations).
Candidate has published articles in peer-reviewed journals.
It is also preferable that the Candidate has some involvement with the National Heart Foundation of Australia at the local or national level within the last five years, and/or a history of contributions to the Heart Foundation's goals and objectives.
NOMINATION PROCESS
Nominations for the Heart Foundation Research Medal must include the following:
Curriculum vitae and bibliography.
A letter of nomination and two supporting letters from individuals who are familiar with the candidate's contribution to the field of cardiovascular research and service to the Heart Foundation. The letter must address each of the major award eligibility criteria and indicate what distinguishes the candidate with regard to each criterion.
Individuals may be nominated an unlimited number of times, but may receive this award only once.
Self-nomination is acceptable.
Nominations will be considered for three years (initial year of nomination plus two subsequent years) with the approval of the candidates. To be considered during subsequent years, the candidate must be willing to update the curriculum vitae, however, another letter of recommendation is not required.

Nominations for the Heart Foundation Research Medal will be considered by a committee consisting of the current Chairs of the Heart Foundation Cardiovascular Health Advisory Committee (CVHAC), Research Committee, the Heart Foundation CEO – National, Chief Medical Officer and Research Program Director.
