The Heart Foundation offers a variety of awards for research relating to cardiovascular disease.
Application forms, information booklets, assessment criteria, progress report proformas and other supporting material for Heart Foundation funding are available by clicking on the name of each award below.
Please ensure you read the relevant instruction booklet carefully before submitting your application. Check the closing dates for each award to make sure you submit your application by the required deadline.
Note that late or incomplete applications will not be accepted.
Peer review process
The Heart Foundation Research Program supports over $10 million in research each year. To determine which applications will be funded, all applicants enter a rigorous peer review process. Assessment is not undertaken by Heart Foundation staff but involves multiple, independent reviews by suitably qualified researchers.
Available awards
Grants-in-Aid
The Heart Foundation awards Grants-in Aid to support biomedical, clinical or public health (including health services) research in the cardiovascular field. Grants of up to two years duration will be awarded. Click here for more information.
Postdoctoral Fellowships (Biomedical, Clinical, Public Health)
These Fellowships are available to medical and science graduates who have completed an MD or PhD award within the last five years and who are seeking support to become independent researchers. Postdoctoral Research Fellowships are tenable for up to two years. They may be full or part-time. Click here for more information.
Overseas Research Fellowships
Overseas Research Fellowships are available to medical and science graduates who have completed a PhD or MD award within the last 18 months. Click here for more information.
Career Development Fellowship
The purpose of the Career Development Fellowship is to develop the career of Australian citizens or permanent residents, who are 4-10 years postdoctoral. Applicants are expected to have spent at least four years actively contributing to cardiovascular research. Career Development Fellowships are tenable for five years. They may be full or part time. Postgraduate Scholarships (Biomedical, Clinical, Public Health)
Biomedical, clinical and public health Postgraduate Scholarships are for nursing, medical, science or other relevant graduates seeking support for full time research studies leading to a PhD at a recognised Australian research institution. Postgraduate Scholarships are normally awarded for three years. Click here for more information.
South Australian Cardiovascular Research Development Program
The Heart Foundation and the South Australian Department of Health have partnered to fund cardiovascular research projects in South Australia to the value of $5million over the next seven years.
The South Australian Cardiovascular Research Development Program (SACVRDP) will support high quality research, which is relevant to heart, stroke and blood vessel disease with a focus on supporting early career researchers. The aim of this funding is to stimulate, enhance and sustain the collaborative potential of South Australian researchers.

Summer Scholarships
Summer Scholarships give undergraduates an opportunity to participate in biomedical, clinical or public health research projects which are broadly related to heart, stroke and blood vessel disease. Click here for more information.
Travel Grants
Travel Grants are available to support Australian researchers travelling to present their cardiovascular research at a conference overseas. They are also available to Indigenous health researchers travelling to present their research in Australia. Click here for more information.
Strategic Research
In late 2007, the Heart Foundation launched a Strategic Research Program to fund research in priority areas defined by the Heart Foundation's work. The first priority area for the Strategic Research Program was Depression and Heart Disease, in which we have partnered with beyond blue: the national depression initiative and have so far offered two rounds of funding.
