Deep Vein Thrombosis Treatment

Deep vein thrombosis treatement includes the use of medications. Medications are usually used to prevent the blood from clotting further while the body breaks down the existing clot.

If you have DVT, you are likely to be prescribed anticoagulant (blood thinning) medication, usually warfarin, for a period of months (and sometimes longer). While you are taking warfarin, regular blood tests are required to adjust the dose to ensure the medication is effective and to minimise side effects, particularly excessive bleeding. You will also need to be careful about your eating patterns and check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking any other medications (including over-the-counter medications).

Other types of deep vein thrombosis treatment may be recommended if, for some reason, you are unable to take anticoagulant medication.

In the case of pulmonary embolism, emergency treatment in hospital is required.
