Five Steps to a Healthy Life

Australian kids are not as healthy as they should be. Many of them are putting on excess weight and not losing it as they get older.

Over the last 20 years, rates of overweight and obesity in children have risen greatly in many countries around the world, including Australia. The NSW SPANS data from 2004 indicates that overall a quarter of all boys and almost a quarter of all girls are overweight or obese.

The Healthy Kids website, developed jointly by the Heart Foundation and the NSW Departments of Health, Education and Training, and Sport and Recreation provides comprehensive, accurate and useful information to help teachers.

There are resources and policies for PDHPE teachers, and planning tools from the NSW Department of Education and Training, focusing on physical activity for students.

Six fact sheets have been translated into 10 languages including Chinese, Macedonian, Arabic, Greek, Italian and Vietnamese. They can be downloaded from The Healthy Kids website.
