Drinks

Alcohol

One or two standard drinks per day may do you no harm (assuming you are a reasonably healthy adult), but excessive drinking of alcohol increases your risk of high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke, as well as many other problems.

Alcohol does not raise blood cholesterol, but it can raise triglycerides, blood pressure and body weight.

Coffee

The consumption of instant and filtered coffee (both regular and decaffeinated) in moderate amounts is considered safe. Certain methods of preparing coffee (such as boiling ground coffee beans for long periods) may lead to a higher blood cholesterol level.

Fruit juices and soft drinks

Both fruit juices and soft drinks have about the same kilojoules as regular beer. Drinking fruit juices and soft drinks may not help you reach a healthy weight.

If you are watching your kilojoule intake, some healthier options include:

  • water, plain mineral water and soda water
  • diet soft drinks, diet cordials
  • tea, coffee, herbal teas (if you add milk, use low fat alternatives)
